A heavyweight team in the Australian Football League (AFL) has not ruled out playing an exhibition match in the South Island.

Collingwood AFL chief executive Gary Pert, who arrived in Queenstown with the Magpies on Saturday, said the side - which has played in a record 43 grand finals, including replays - had been asked to play in New Zealand before, but it had not fitted in with the playing schedule.

Provided there was enough interest in an exhibition match and the timing was right, there was a possibility a game could be played in Queenstown or possibly Dunedin.

''Other teams have taken it on [in New Zealand] ... largely, we're committed in a lot of our fixtures to play at the MCG [Melbourne Cricket Ground], because financially, it's so important to them.

''When we travel to play ... Collingwood supporters will travel with us.

''If we were to do anything here more formally, we would expect a big contingent would come with us.

''We've certainly been very impressed [with Queenstown]. There's not a single element that doesn't meet our needs.''

Last year, the 123-year-old club, which turns over close to $80 million a year, boasted more than 80,000 members and had an average home-game turn-out of 60,000.

The side, ''the traditional rival for every other club'', was also supported by about 10,000 people at every away game, which helped increase the bottom line for opponents.

Media manager Stephen Rielly said the side spent time on Sunday sightseeing in and around Queenstown, including a trip on the Shotover Jet, before a full training session at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday morning.

The Collingwood AFL team will be holding a public training session at the Queenstown Events Centre from 9am until about 2.30pm on Thursday.
