Phoenix Warrior is combining his toughest test to date with his first standing start - but his trainer thinks he can handle it.

The 4yr-old will tackle c2 to c6 pacers in the $14,999 Wairio Cup at Winton tomorrow and went to the trials at Balfour on December 7 as part of Makarewa trainer Tony Barron's quest to ensure his manners are intact for the feature.

The son of Jereme's Jet did everything right in the eight-horse, 2600m trial, winning by

eight lengths over Macardo after giving him a 10m start.

''As long as he's got someone walking around with him, he's very good,'' Barron said.

''He's a good-gaited horse so as long as he doesn't get silly, I'm picking he'll step away pretty good.''

The gelding did a top job on a trip to Addington last month, finishing third to No Doctor Needed on New Zealand Cup day before backing up to win the South Of The Waitaki race on show day over Sheeza Shark.

''He was just a little jaded on show day - he did a good job to dig in and win it,'' Barron said.

''He bounces back from everything pretty good. His work and that since Balfour has just been first-rate.''

Experiment's journey to Addington was less successful, as she galloped with a lap to go on New Zealand Cup day and was pulled up by driver Dexter Dunn.

However, the mare had excuses, and Barron expects her to be right on the mark for tomorrow's c1-c5 trot.

''She burst out in her foot about three days before. I almost had her right but almost wasn't good enough for that day,'' he said.

''She's just really starting to come again right now.''

The 6yr-old can overcome the 40m handicap back mark she shares with Dwindle Mist, as long as she makes a clean start.

''If she steps good, she'll be tough to beat, I say - it just depends what the others do and how many gallop out of the way. It is her favourite track. That's why I wanted to get her there. She goes pretty good around Winton.''

Barron's two other chances at Winton are McCovey Cove (race 9) and first-starter Schwartz Denario (race 10).

McCovey Cove was in winning form at Ascot Park on December 5, as she led then took cover before finishing off to beat Shards Phoenix.

''She's just had no luck for eight or 10 starts. She's just had bad draws and bad luck and she kept chipping away with thirds and seconds.''

Schwartz Denario has drawn 17 for her debut run, and Barron labelled her as one to watch over the summer.

''She's actually not a bad filly - I really like her. If it's not on Saturday, the punters should be watching her over the Christmas circuit.''

Barron also has Queen Kenny and Makarewa Jake at Alexandra Park tonight, and he's full of confidence about Queen Kenny in race 10.

''I think the draw is ideal, depending on Yagunnakissmeornot and what it does,'' he said.

''The way she got out on show day, if she goes out [from the gate], she'll get them rolling along.''
