Racing: Better B Chevron appeals in fillies' and mares' race

Do not throw your last $5 on Better B Chevron to be at the Harness Jewels next month, even if she wins at Oamaru tomorrow.

The Ken Barron-trained filly is sitting 15th on the leaderboard for the 2yr-old female pacing division of the Harness Jewels, and needs a top 12 finish to qualify for the big mile day at Cambridge.

However, despite the likely withdrawal of Ready To Fire and Smiling Sophie from the Jewels, Barron said it was very unlikely Better B Chevron would make the trip.

Even a placing would be enough for the filly to qualify if those withdrawals are confirmed, but Barron's reticence is understandable, considering the long trip north to Cambridge to take on top-class fillies such as Spanish Armada and Delightful Memphis.

Better B Chevron was probably entitled to exit the maiden grade at Timaru last week after a cosy run on the marker.

"She was a bit disappointing last week but she seems a bit better this week, so hopefully she can win that,'' Barron said of tomorrow's race.

Her third to Serengeti on April 29 reads better, although she was eight lengths off Serengeti after ending up parked for the last 1000m.

"Hopefully if we can lead and dictate, that would be good.''

Mighty American (race 3) makes his debut in a 2600m pace, although a second line draw makes things awkward for the 3yr-old.

"He's been going good at the trials, and he's a good chance,'' Barron said.

"As you say, it's a second-line draw, which he's never had before, and it's race conditions. But he's pretty sensible and he's a nice horse so he just needs a bit of luck.''

Another American Ideal 3yr-old, Billy, makes his return to racing tomorrow in race 5 after running fifth on debut behind Benicio at Addington in the spring.

"He went pretty good when he raced last time in. If things unfold for him, he's a good chance.''

The gelding has stepped out three times in the autumn at the trials and workouts for two seconds and a trial win at Ashburton on May 3.

Roydon Jewel (race 8) won at her last visit to Oamaru and is a good chance in the same grade, while Barron said punters should not drop Corroboree (race 10) just yet after dropping out at Rangiora on April 24.

"He's a bit of a problem. If he gets an uncontested lead, he'll be strong. He's a funny horse, but when things go his way, he's pretty good.''

Barron had success at Forbury Park on Thursday night, as did the Prospero No 1 Syndicate, which races horses with Barron.

Brunello scored his second win in five days for the syndicate with Thursday night's win, and

Syndicate members John and Colleen Gillies made the trip south from Ashburton to watch the son of Real Desire, oneof five horses raced by the syndicate out of Barron's West Melton stables.

The Ashburton couple reappeared for a winners' photo after race 10 when another syndicate horse, Illegal Immigrant, flew up the passing lane to win, also providing driver Blair Orange with his 100th winner for the season.

The other horses in the syndicate are led by Amazon Lily, who has drawn barrier 1 in the New Zealand Oaks at Addington today.

Barron rates Eh Ef El (race 11) as the best of his chances at the premier meeting at Addington.
