Rowing: Strong showing from St Kevin's

Julia Fauth led the charge for St Kevin's College on the opening days of the Maadi Cup regatta at Lake Ruataniwha.

Fauth (16), who won a gold medal in the girls under-15 single sculls at Lake Karapiro last year, made a strong statement when she won her under-17 heat in 9min 49.51sec.

It was a good day for St Kevin's College with six of its crews reaching today's quarterfinals.

The talented Tiana Mihaere also qualified in the girls under-17 single sculls when she won her heat in 10min 21.15sec.

Mihaere reached her second quarterfinal in the girls under-18 double sculls with Sydney Telfer in a time of 8min 30.08sec.

The boys under-16 double sculls of Charlie Wallis and Adam Sewhoy reached the quarterfinals with their heat win in 8min 16.48sec.

Wallis also reached the quarterfinals of the single sculls.

The boys under-15 double sculls of Kalas Taukamo and Reuben Mihaere reached the quarterfinals with their winning heat time of 8min 13.38sec.

The girls under-15 double sculls of Meg Knowler and Molly Kay also reached the quarterfinals in a time of 10min 05.26sec.

Mark Taylor and James Scott (Waitaki Boys') won the boys under-15 double sculls heat in 7min 47.86sec. Taylor also reached the semifinals of the single sculls.

Seventeen crews from North Otago schools contested the heats and 11 crews reached the quarterfinals.

It was a good day for Waitaki Girls' with the under-18 quadruple sculls of Maysie Scott, Morgan Henderson, Micaela Irvine, Natalie Grant and cox Jessica Mulligan going straight through to the A final.

Grant and Irvine also reached the quarterfinals of the double sculls with their winning heat time of 8min 34.22sec.

Loren Cunningham and Henderson reached the quarterfinals of the girls under-15 double sculls and under-16 singles sculls.

The John McGlashan under-16 double sculls of Tom Grave and Woody Kirkwood reached the quarterfinals in a time of 8min 05.72sec.

Alex Yarnall won his heat in the boys under-18 single sculls in 9min 23.83sec.

The Mt Aspiring College boys under-16 double sculls of Riley Bruce and Nathan Redai reached the quarterfinals in a time of 8min 04.21sec. Bruce also won his heat in the boys under-17 single sculls in 8min 04.67sec.

The Cromwell College boys under-16 double sculls of Daniel Anderson and Sebastian Downie reached the quarterfinals with a time of 8min 23.49sec.

Lucy Geddes (Dunstan) reached the quarterfinals in the girls under-16 single sculls in 8min 34.46sec.
