Rowing: Geddes advances to semis

Lucy Geddes (Dunstan) gave notice yesterday that she will be a podium prospect at the Maadi Cup tomorrow.

Geddes, one of the most promising younger scullers, reached today's semifinals of the girls under-16 single sculls when she won her quarterfinal heat in 8min 32.94sec.

Geddes won a bronze medal in the under-15 quadruple sculls last year and is expected to go one place better this year.

Another podium prospect in the event is Riley Homan (Queen's) who was second in her heat in 8min 31.24sec.

Waitaki Girls' High School has two scullers in the semifinals. Morgan Henderson was timed in the quarterfinals at 8min 36.83sec and Loren Cunningham 8min 38.34sec.

In the girls under-18 lightweight double sculls, the Dunstan pair of Sydney Cook and Macaela Turfus reached the semifinals with a heat time of 8min 30.63sec.

The Dunstan novice eight (stroke Ruby Randall) reached the final of the exhibition event with a heat time of 7min 29.59sec.

The first Otago crew to reach an A final was the St Hilda's under-15 eight stroked by Lili Sabonadiere.

Four Otago scullers reached the semifinals of the girls under-17 single sculls with Julia Fauth (St Kevin's) third in her heat in 8min 26.78sec and Eliza Adams (St Hilda's) fourth in 8min 27.08sec.

Anna O'Leary (Kavanagh) qualified with 8min 33.93sec and Nina Champion (Wakatipu) with 8min 34.89sec.

Riley Bruce (Mount Aspiring) was third in his quarterfinal in 7min 38.94sec and the Waitaki Boys under-15 double sculls of Mark Taylor and James Scott reached the semifinals by winning their quarterfinal in 7min 20.01sec,.

The St Kevin's girls under-18 double sculls of Sydney Telfer and Tina Mihaere reached the semifinals with a time of 7min 54.73sec. St Hilda's Courtney Shea and Claudia Paterson qualified with a time of 8min 00.65sec.

Telfer teamed with Georgie Dyson to reach the semifinal of the girls under-18 novice double sculls with a time of 8min 14.65sec.

Other Otago rowers to reach today's semifinals were Jack O'Leary (Kavanagh), boys under-18 single sculls; St Hilda's girls under-15 quadruple sculls (stroke Claudia Maker); John McGlashan boys under-16 quadruple sculls (stroke Tom Grave); Grave and Woody Kirkwood, boys under-16 double sculls; Riley Bruce and Nathan Redai (Mount Aspiring), boys under-16 double sculls; Otago Boys' under-16 four (stroke Liam Guthrie); St Hilda's girls under-16 four (stroke Lili Sabonadiere); John McGlashan under-15 quadruple sculls (stroke Lachie Bain).
