Otago rules the world of university rowing - again.

The Otago University Rowing Club team (pictured above) cleaned up at the annual New Zealand universities regatta in Wanganui in the mid-semester break. Otago retained ''The Ashes'' for a remarkable 16th straight year with a display of utter dominance.

The 76-strong team finished with 162 points, more than double the tally of the next-best team. Waikato University (79 points) was second and the University of Canterbury (38) was third.

One of the special achievers in the Otago team was the senior women's eight.

The rejigged crew, which had lost five rowers to the New Zealand elite and under-23 squads this year, won the premier race by a 40sec margin, and the Otago No2 crew was second.

The Otago novice men banked 31 points, winning every event in the grade.
