Inspirational leadership from Alhambra-Union captain Matt Kissick helped his side to victory at Hancock Park.

Displaying all the hallmarks of a great captain, Kissick showed speed to the breakdown, driving play from No 8 and skills in the lineout.

Kissick's contribution was complemented by touches of brilliance from first five Peter Breen, who created a superb try when he broke through the Pirates backline on his own 10m, and eluded three tackles before off-loading to fullback Kurt Baker, to score the first of his two tries.

Up front, lock Jeremy McKee and flankers Steve Lack and Brad Oliver were part of a solid defensive screen that shut down a number of promising Pirates attacks.

The Pirates backs burst into life early, with some golden touches from Glenn Dickson outside excellent service from halfback Ben West.

The Pirates pack also displayed some powerful scrummaging, particularly in the first half where it gained two turnovers and a tighthead.

Loose forwards Solomon T-Pole and Josh Clark were dominant on attack and secure in defence.

Alhambra-Union 25 (Kurt Baker 2, Chris Guild tries; Peter Breen 2 con, 2 pen), Pirates 19 (Kenton Leiataua, Poamo Aiiloiloi tries; Glen Dickson 3 pen). Halftime: Alhambra-Union 15-11.
