Rugby: May outstanding player of the game

Harbour's strong front row provided the platform for its win over Alhambra-Union at Watson Park.

Alhambra-Union 17

Highlanders prop Jamie Mackintosh, Peter Mirrielees and Ben Nolan outscrummed their opposition and Harbour scored five tries, three of them from lineout drives.

It was Harbour's fourth win in seven games but it was hard-earned against opposition which did not yield.

Harbour led 17-5 at halftime but Alhambra-Union came back into back in the game when lock Ben Traill scored early in the second spell.

Harbour scored two more tries to gain a four-try bonus point in a game in which both packs were more impressive than their backlines.

Alhambra-Union made a lot of the play but first five-eighth Peter Breen had an off day with the boot, kicking just one out of six.

Breen made frequent line breaks but the Alhambra-Union backs were not able to finish off and all their tries were scored by the forwards.

Lex Kaleca was particularly strong in midfield for Harbour, locks Charles Armstrong and Charles Elton complemented the work of the front row and openside flanker Hadleigh May was the outstanding player of the game.

He made several clean breaks and was invariably in the support of the ball carrier in an energetic and skilled performance.

Mirrielees scored his two tries in the first quarter and led by example from hooker, while Mackintosh showed the benefit of his experience.

No 8 Graeme Cashmore, Traill and front-rowers Hagan Free, Tom Viggo and Jeremy McKee all worked hard for Alhambra-Union.
