Rugby: Brazier ready to play again

Black Ferns star Kelly Brazier is finally ready to get back on the rugby field although she will not be able to use one of her major attributes.

Brazier has had more than six months off the paddock after having an operation around her right hip to fix a nagging groin injury.

She was bothered by the groin for the first half of last year, but doctors found the injury was not in her groin but was more to do with her right hip. Her best option was to have an operation rather than rest the injury.

Some bone was shaved off her hip, the labrum in her hip reattached to her pelvis, and a soft screw was placed in her hip.

She had to have complete rest for a few weeks late last year, but has slowly been getting back into action and is now targeting the sevens tournament in Amsterdam next month.

The only issue she is still facing is that she has not been given the all-clear to kick the ball yet. She can do everything else on the field, but her doctors think the injury is not sufficiently healed for her to kick the ball.

Brazier (24) said that may lead to her having to play a different position in sevens if she makes the team.

She had been playing in the position of sweeper, who cleans up behind the front line and looks to close down any line breaks.

The sweeper also often kicks the ball when under pressure.

''It is going to be hard as it is something I'm used to doing and is part of the position,'' she said.

''It is for all kicking, so I can't kick for goals, either.''

She is usually a goal-kicker for the side and played a key role for the team in its World Cup win in Moscow last year.

Brazier is just back from a Black Ferns camp in Auckland.

It was held in preparation for a June series and also to finalise selection for the squad to travel to the World Cup in France.

Brazier was a key player in the team which won the World Cup in England in 2010.

The World Cup starts in just under 100 days and the squad for both the June series and the World Cup is expected to be named shortly.

Otago players attending the camp, which had just under 50 players, were No 8 Angie Sisafa, inside back Victoria Nafatali, prop Pip Love and midfield back Lucy Anderson.
