Rugby: Teams to honour day

Club rugby will mark Anzac Day tomorrow with a moment's silence and a new logo in remembrance of the events of 100 years ago.

With Anzac Day falling on a Saturday this year, rugby at the grass-roots level decided to honour the event.

Right across New Zealand, no games will be played before 1pm, and teams will be asked to set up on the 10m line for a moment of silence for all games, no matter what level.

Dunedin junior metropolitan games will not be played tomorrow, and the opening day of the season for the children will switch to Monday.

Otago Rugby Football Union community rugby manager Richard Perkins said clubs were keen to be involved in the remembrance.

Games will start at 1.15pm and 3pm, 15 minutes later than normal.

Dunedin premier clubs will be displaying a special World War 1 remembrance logo on their playing kits.

These will be launched tomorrow and will be worn for the rest of the season.

Perkins said Anzac Day was a big day for club rugby and he hoped people got out and enjoyed it.

It is the first full day of the season as school rugby kicks off.

Dunedin RSA senior vice-president Fred Daniel said the military and rugby had a long shared history and similar qualities were needed in both pursuits.

Team-mates in rugby were like soldiers in that there was an absolute brotherhood between each other and they had the backs of their mates.

They were often caught in tough situations which took the combined work of many to achieve success.

Daniel, who is a life member and secretary of the Sassenachs club, said relationships between soldiers and those between rugby team-mates were similar.

He said all had respect for each other, no matter the situation.

On the field today, the major match is at Bathgate Park where the two unbeaten sides - Southern and Taieri - go up against each other.

Southern is top of the table as it has won all its games, and taken the four-try bonus point every time.

Taieri, in second place, has drawn with Harbour and won all its other games although it has lost some key players through injury.

There are some young faces in the Eels backline and the onus will go on the likes of loose forwards Charlie O'Connell and Willis Scott.

Prop Nick McLennan has returned from Perth and is expected to get some action.

In another key game, University A will want to get back to winning form when it takes on Zingari-Richmond at the University Oval.

The students have been decimated by injuries, players away with age-grade sides and New Zealand Universities commitments.

More than 15 of the club's players are unavailable.

Harbour and Dunedin should prevail in their matches, while there may not be much in the game between Green Island and Alhambra-Union.
