University A has made a strong beginning to its title defence, crushing Alhambra-Union 63-7 at the North Ground on Thursday evening.

The students dominated the set-pieces through Highlanders prop Daniel Lienert-Brown, while Otago lock Josh Dickson and powerful No 8 Sione Teu and hooker Sam Sturgess also impressed.

Classy first five-eighth Fletcher Smith made the most of the extra space and time his pack bought him and ghosted through gaps throughout the match.

He scored the game's last try when he dodged his marker and ran around the cover defence to dot down under the posts. He whacked over the conversion to finish with 23 points.

Varsity's midfield pairing of Tim Murgatroyd and Shae Tucker bagged two tries apiece.

In other games, Pirates trailed Green Island 26-16 at the break but rallied to win 27-26.

Dunedin scored a converted try at the death to beat Harbour 36-34, Taieri dispatched Zingari-Richmond 55-24 and Southern was too good for
Kaikorai, winning 33-7.
