Rugby: No dilemma for Drummond

Shane Drummond.
Shane Drummond.
Shane Drummond has a foot firmly placed in both camps.

Fair enough too, for neither his heart nor his head can sway him either way for tonight's big match between the Highlanders and the Crusaders.

Drummond, a Nelson car dealer, was one of the four people who became part-owners of the Highlanders last year.

Drummond, Warren Goddard, Raymond Burke and Matthew Davey became the majority owners of the Highlanders last November.

For Drummond, that was a business decision.

But it is a family matter that will see part of him in behind the opponent at Forsyth Barr Stadium tonight.

He is the father of halfback Mitchell Drummond, who is set to be on the reserves bench tonight.

Shane Drummond said he had mixed feelings but was excited to be involved in both camps.

"There is no reason I cannot support two teams. They have both been doing very well,'' he said.

"One is the leader on the table and the Highlanders, after everyone underestimated them going into the Chiefs game, are going well.

"You couldn't ask for better, really.''

Drummond said he got a lot of pleasure out of watching his son and had gone as far as Perth this year to see him in action.

He and wife Sarah would be in the stands tonight after he attends a Highlanders board meeting in Dunedin today.

He had been involved with rugby for most of his life and earlier this year ended a 20 year-plus involvement with the Tasman, where he finished off as union president, and before that Nelson Bays, rugby union.

"For a couple of months there I was a president, owner and father. I was lucky enough to do all three at once.''

As for a score tonight, he, predictably, decided to sit on the fence.

"A draw, I'd say. A high-scoring draw. The teams have got some real attacking bones in them.''
