Rugby: Fortnight makes a difference for Zingari-Richmond

Two weeks is a long time in sport.

On May 7, at Montecillo, the Zingari-Richmond premier side had a loss.

Not just any loss, however - it was an absolute thumping.

The side went down 137-0 to University A in a game which did not even last 80 minutes, called off early by the referee.

It was the biggest winning margin recorded in Dunedin club rugby.

That led to questions about the future of the side and the state of the competition.

But the club did not throw in the towel.

There were no white flags around.

It just knuckled down, some players returned and everyone got into some hard work.

That paid dividends almost immediately.

A better performance against Alhambra-Union followed - although still a loss - and then on Saturday, returning to Montecillo for the first time since the slaughter two weeks ago, Zingari-Richmond promptly came out and won.

And not just any win.

A win over Taieri, the side which made the final last year and is sitting in the top four this season.

Played in the sort of conditions even a duck would stay inside for, Zingari-Richmond got out to a 15-0 lead after 20 minutes and then hung on through some fierce defence in the second half, to win 22-19.

It was just the second win of the season for the side and it was lapped up by the club's loyal supporters.

They clapped the side into the changing rooms after the match and the club rooms was humming on Saturday night.

It was a special moment for tighthead prop Chris Preddy, who was playing his 100th premier game for the club on Saturday.

Preddy, who hails from Romahapa in South Otago, and travels up to practice twice a week, every week of the season, was part of a strong Zingari-Richmond scrum which had the ascendancy over Taieri all game.

The win also gave the side the Downie Stewart Challenge Trophy.

Zingari-Richmond club captain Stephen Baughan said the clubrooms was packed and in great spirit on Saturday night.

"We got a few players back but it was mostly the same guys. They toughed it out, never gave up and gave it all. It's just fantastic,'' Baughan said.

Baughan said he got 40 phone calls from media from Alaska to Australia after the thumping two weeks ago and expected the same now the side had won.

Just to put the icing on the cake, the club's colts side beat the Southern Ravens on Saturday to win the Bob Culbert Memorial Trophy.
