The Stormers, the Super 14 team based in Cape Town, defeated the English premiership side Saracens 43-33 in a friendly match at Newlands over the weekend, with Fatafehi coming off the bench to get game time.
Fatafehi had been taken on by Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus for a one-week trial but this was extended to two weeks so he could be part of the team's build-up for the match against the English side.
Erasmus told South African media that Fatafehi's agent contacted the Stormers and the South African side agreed to fly him in so he could have a look at the set-up and do some training with the squad.
No decision has been made over his inclusion in the Stormers squad.
Fatafehi, of Tongan and Fijian descent, played 14 games for Otago, scoring four tries, but was never a regular in the team.
He scored a try in his first game against North Harbour in a pre-season game in 2006, and also scored a try in his last game against Wellington last year.
He was not contracted to the Otago union last year.
A hefty winger, at 112kg, he played for the Green Island club.
He was lively on the club scene, but struggled to make an impact at the next level, with his hands letting him down on several occasions.
More than 30,000 attended the friendly match against the Saracens side, captained by former All Black Chris Jack.
