The Highlanders staged a furious comeback, but could not finish it off as they were stunned by the Reds in a 28-27 loss in Brisbane tonight.

After trailing 22-6 at the break they had the better of the early second half play, before scoring three late tries to give themselves a chance in the final five minutes.

However the deficit was too much to haul in. The Reds scored three tries themselves in the first half, as the Highlanders missed tackles and the Reds gained go-forward with ease.

The mistakes crept into the Highlanders' game when they did have the ball and two penalty goals were all they could manage in the first half.
