The loss of Scott Cartwright and Jamie Robinson has weakened the Otago team that contests the Jefferies Cup in Christchurch this weekend.
Otago had its best performance this century when it finished runner-up to Canterbury last season.
But without Cartwright and Robinson, Otago will struggle to make the final.
The strong Canterbury team has won the trophy every year since 1993 and it would be a major surprise if it was beaten on its home turf.
It is expected to win its 18th successive title.
Cartwright, the top batter in last year's interprovincial competition, has shifted to Wellington to make a claim for selection in the Black Sox.
Robinson, an accurate shortstop, is not available this weekend but will be back for the national provincial championships.
Returning to the Otago side after a few years on the sidelines are utility Glen Forrester and first baseman Simon Maole.
Newcomers are Otago Boys' High School pitcher Ben Watts and outfielder Crete Whaanga.
Watts is the younger brother of catcher Cameron Watts, who made his debut for Otago last year.
Ten players have been named in the squad for this weekend and an additional Canterbury club pitcher and catcher will join the squad.
The Black Sox are making a rare appearance in the South Island this weekend and will play the Canterbury Red Sox on Saturday and the South Island All Stars team on Sunday.
It is a good incentive for Otago players as the All Stars team will be selected based on performances in the Jefferies Cup.
The competing teams in the Jefferies Cup are: Southland, Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson, Southland Development, Canterbury Under-19 and Otago.
