Scott Cartwright underlined his status as Otago's Mr Softball
with a sweep of the major club honours on Saturday.
Cartwright (30) started the day by leading his Dodgers to
victory in the premier champion of champions final against
the Saints at Ellis Park.
He both pitched and hit as the Dodgers won the first game
12-3 and the second 5-4 to claim the title.
Cartwright was then named the Dunedin softball player of the
year and the premier competition's top batter at the
end-of-season awards function.
The long-serving club, provincial and national league player
also contributed to the coaching ranks, at senior and
under-17 level, and deserved every accolade, Softball Otago
boss Jill Johnson said.
"Scott does a great job and he's got a wealth of softball
knowledge that he passes on to so many people," Johnson said.
Cartwright and his Dodgers team-mates will be back in action
later this week, when they play in the national open club
championships in Christchurch.
Strong wind affected the final round of local competition on
Saturday, with hits that would normally clear the fence
catching in the breeze.
The Saints qualified for the final with an 18-1 thrashing of
Ellis Park in just three innings, but could not handle the
Dodgers' pace in the opening game.
In the second, the Saints took a 4-2 lead through six innings
before the Dodgers roared back with a three-run seventh
inning.
Other major awards went to Sam Jones (Saints, best pitcher),
Jamie Robinson (Dodgers, MVP) and Ryan Williams (Ellis Park,
most promising).
