Dunedin will play host to the the national surfing
championship in January.
The event will be based at St Clair and competition will take
place at that beach if the surf is of sufficient standard.
If the surf goes flat competition will take place at nearby
beaches.
The championship will be held from January 13-16. The event,
which marks its 50th anniversary in 2012, was last contested
in Dunedin in 2003.
It will be the fifth time it has been held in the city.
The championship will return to its full complement of 22
divisions in Dunedin after being split up in 2010. The event
will include a challenge between North Island and South
Island surfers.
South Coast Boardriders Club president Damian Phillips said
having the championship in Dunedin was great news for the
city, and St Clair was a fantastic venue for the event.
