Remarkable wins by Hanna English (13) and Jessie Stevenson (14) were the highlights of Dunedin club tennis on Saturday.

Both won without the loss of a game in matches where they were expected to struggle against older opponents with strong records previously at both senior and junior level.

English beat Amy Rapley, who was filling in for Georgia Hume (illness), proving there is no substitute for matchplay. Rapley, a former junior champion, was having her first match for the season after exams.

However, Debbie Cartwright (Eastern Harbour) beat Southlander Courtney O'Callaghan (EH/Country) 6-1, 7-5 and combined with Angela Mockford to take the doubles and the overall result.

Stevenson led her Balmacewen team, missing No 1 Brittany Wong, to a 3-0 win over St Clair. She beat Lauren Fowler, promoted to top spot in the absence of Sian English, with surprising ease after being taken to three sets earlier in the season. Recent tournament play in Timaru benefited Stevenson while Fowler also has recently had exam commitments.

Pauline Hobbhahn, who had never played on a hardcourt surface before coming to Dunedin from Germany, backed Stevenson up well with a straight sets singles win over Rakhee Raghunandan and a close final set tiebreak win in doubles.

Taieri men registered a rare 5-1 against Mornington Roslyn Blue, who were without top man Shaun Paringatai, when the young Mornington squad struggled to cope with their promotion.

Tom Beamish took Mornington's only win, finishing the stronger in the third set against Phil Williams, while Andrew Mitchell, Matt McCutcheon and Kit Collins all won in straight sets for the plainsmen.

Mornington Roslyn Black beat Eastern Harbour 4-2. Oliver Reid continued the trend of strong results for juniors when he beat experienced Otago representative Philip Mirfin 6-1, 6-3 on his favoured indoor courts with a consistent display.

Ryan Eggers played the ironman when he took over four hours to outlast Henry Caird in the hot indoor conditions 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. However, Oliver Scott and Adam Williams took quick wins to sink Harbour's hopes.
