Tennis: Closely-fought contests order of the day

It was a day of close contests as more than half the rubbers were decided in the full three sets in Dunedin club tennis on Saturday.

Taieri came out on the better side in three of the four three-setters and beat Balmacewen Federer 4-2, while St Clair beat Eastern Harbour 9-6 on sets, after rubbers were tied at 3-3. St Clair was able to claim a bonus set in each of its losses.

The Tertiary club has suspended its programme, creating a bye until it returns in February.

Taieri was able to overcome the absence of Darryl Paterson to keep its record at one loss for the season when it finished stronger in most of the tight matches, but No1 Carlos Reid shut out his former school mate Paddy Ou 6-2, 6-4.

Ou has been highly competitive but has found a power disadvantage from some of his more strongly-built rivals and Reid was able to get some cheap points through extra pace.

The return to competitive play of Pat Nolan was a big help to Balmacewen as he beat Phil Williams 6-4, 6-2.

Nolan, who formerly played in Canterbury, and played for Otago two seasons ago as a student, has returned and is a welcome addition who should improve further.

Graeme Clarke and Connor Morrison each won 6-3 in the third set against Fraser Richardson and Russell Drew respectively but were beaten in turn by the same margin in their doubles match.

Reid and Williams came from 2-6 down to sneak a tiebreak second set and win the third 6-3 in the top double.

The top singles in the tie between St Clair and Eastern Harbour had several twists, but Ryan Eggers was able to reverse the close first-round result when he beat Mitchell Sizemore 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Eggers raced to a 6-1, 2-0 lead, as Sizemore struggled with the wind, although he had superior power on his groundstrokes.

However, Sizemore found his mark more often in the second set and led 2-0 in the decider, before Eggers, continuing to retrieve effectively, forced errors at the business end. Several double faults and volley errors, when Sizemore tried to press, helped Eggers home.

Veterans Tony Ryder and Robin Versteeg won both singles and doubles in straight sets, and were the deciding factor in the overall team win, while Damian Hill pushed Henry Hailes for the first 90 minutes before losing the third set 0-6.
