Canterbury skippers claimed a clean sweep in the South Island P and Starling youth yachting championships sailed on Otago Harbour at the weekend.

In the smaller P class division, Charlotte Corston (Charteris Bay Yacht Club) was a convincing winner, never worse than second in the eight-race series.

She was followed home by fellow club member Samuel Lee, with Naval Point Lyttelton sailor Taylor Balogh in third place.

In the Starling division, Waimakariri sailor Gareth Moore revelled in the stronger north-easterly sea breeze on Saturday to race into the lead, a second place in the first race followed by seven consecutive wins.

Moore's impressive performance left him well clear of Timaru sailor Carey Shelley in second place.

Layton Hern, from Christchurch, was third and the best-performed local skipper was Vauxhall Yacht Club's Ryan Craig.

The championships, hosted by the Vauxhall and Otago yacht clubs, featured 36 sailors from throughout the South Island enjoying the fine conditions and light to moderate sea breezes.

Saturday's breeze, which built to around 20 knots, sorted out the experienced sailors, leaving some ashore, but yesterday's much calmer conditions made for excellent racing.

Members of the Foley-Logan family made the long trip from Nelson, brothers Daniel and Liam taking seventh and eighth overall.
