Wanaka freestyle skier Jossi Wells won a big air bronze medal
at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, at the weekend,
making him a three-time medallist at the competition.
It was the New Zealanders' day at the finals of the Freeski
Open of New Zealand big mountain competition at The
Remarkables on Saturday, with George Pengelly, Charlie Lyons
and Sam Smoothy making a clean sweep of the men's podium and
Janina Kuzma and Mitchey Greig coming second and third
respectively.
Queenstown-based skiers Taylor Rapley and Ben Griffin
distinguished themselves at the final event in the New
Zealand alpine championships at Coronet Peak on Friday and
Saturday.
Wanaka's hometown hero,
Jossi Wells, held off a 12-strong field of international
challengers to win the New Zealand Freeski Open slopestyle
title at the Snow Park yesterday.
Despite leaving his ski pants at home, Scott Kneller, of
Australia, clad in track pants, still managed to triumph in
yesterday's Winter Games men's ski cross at Cardrona.
For Winter Games gold medallist Warner Nickerson, time spent
in Dunedin and the Southern Lakes was the stimulus that
helped him lift his Alpine ski racing career.
