Warrington teacher Trish Korth will be
packing her bags to travel to Scott Base in the Antarctic
next term.
She has been selected from 300 applicants for a teaching
fellowship to travel to the Antarctic for three weeks.
She will hold a primary teacher's fellowship for the
Antarctic from the Royal Society of New Zealand. She will be
on leave from her position at Warrington school for two
terms.
Mrs Korth (45) plans to set up a video conferencing link with
the three classes at Warrington school while she is in the
Antarctic.
She hopes to hold daily video conferencing sessions with the
Warrington teachers and their pupils. She has enjoyed reading
about the Antarctic and is very aware of the degree of
interdependence she and others in the Antarctic will be bound
by.
She was influenced by the work of Sir Edmund Hillary on the
ice.
A keen tramper, she has built up her physical fitness
tramping in the Silver Peaks area near Dunedin.
Mrs Korth, who has a BSc in botany and biochemistry, will be
involved in a study of marine life. However, she is not yet
sure which group of scientists she will be working with.
When she returns to New Zealand she will spend the remainder
of the year visiting schools and developing resources on the
Antarctic.
