The oldest working locomotive in New Zealand arrived in Oamaru on Tuesday in preparation for the town's Victorian heritage celebrations next week.

Built in 1873 by Dubs and Co, in Glasgow, A67 was given to Ocean Beach Railway in Dunedin by New Zealand Cement Holdings in 1967.

Oamaru Steam and Rail general manager Harry Andrew said the locomotive worked in Oamaru from 1875 to 1877.

"It's good to have something come back to Oamaru that was here. It's a drawcard for people to come and look at," Mr Andrew said.

As well as giving rides between the Harbourside station and the harbour during the celebrations, the locomotive will also be used over the Christmas holiday period.
