Oamaru will be part of a simultaneous nationwide protest
tomorrow over the 25c an hour increase in the minimum wage.
Rebecca Anderson, of Oamaru, has organised a four-hour
protest outside Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean's office - the same
time other demonstrations will be taking place throughout New
Zealand.
It is part of a national campaign being organised by Unite, a
private sector community union and non-profit organisation,
which wants the minimum wage increased to $15 an hour, part
of a "campaign for a living wage".
The Government has increased the minimum wage from $12.50 an
hour to $12.75 from April 1.
Ms Anderson said recently she read about Unite's campaign and
had decided to organise a demonstration in Oamaru, starting
at 11.25am.
"It will show that Oamaru people can do it just as well as
other centres," she said.
She is appealing to people who support a higher minimum wage
to join the demonstration and has spoken to union
representatives and opposition political party
representatives in Oamaru as well.
"The issue cuts across the spectrum of political opinion,"
she said.
