Minimal interest in minimum wage protest

A four-hour protest over a 25c-an-hour increase in the minimum wage in Oamaru on Saturday was called off after only the organiser and another person turned up.

The protest was to coincide with nationwide demonstrations over the Government's decision to increase the minimum hourly rate from $12.50 to $12.75 from April 1 and called for a minimum rate of $15 an hour.

Protest organiser Rebecca Anderson was disappointed with the response in Oamaru, despite having spread the word it was on.

The Oamaru protest was to have been part of a national campaign organised by Unite, a private sector community union.

This explains the migration to Australia

No wonder there is migration of all younger people to Australia. The government has to buck up their ideas with the minimum wage for adults 21yrs and older. Over here in Australia its nowhere below the $15 start line. Even people working check-outs at Kmart get $18 an hour. NZ holds no interest or livable options for young people. As soon as we graduate with qualifications we will head to the places that will pay us the best rates with the most opportunities to succeed in life and pay off university fees/loans. it is not cheap to get ahead in life.
