It's lambing time at Palmerston Primary School.

A prime lamb competition has been organised to raise money to fund a sixth teacher at the school.

Eighty lambs have already been given for the competition, which will be held tomorrow afternoon at Kerry and Jacqui Chittock's farm. Entries will be taken until before lunchtime.

Mr and Mrs Chittock were involved in a similar fundraising event when they were living in the Catlins area several years ago.

The best thing was that it was a "great community day", which brought people together, and it was hoped to have the same atmosphere tomorrow, Mrs Chittock said.

People were asked to give a lamb or lambs and, once killed, all money would go to the Home and School committee.

There were three sections - 14kg-17kg, 17.1kg-21.5kg and heaviest lamb - and it was hoped to raise about $6000.

The lambs would be weighed and judged and a barbecue and prizegiving would be held from 3pm. It was aimed to give something back to those who had supported the competition and there were more than $3000 worth of spot prizes, Mrs Chittock said.

Those prizes ranged from a truck-load of lime, dog biscuits, whisky, drench, plants and merino products, to vouchers for clothing, soil tests and transport. Every lamb entered would receive a spot prize worth a minimum of $50.

The winners of each of the three sections would each receive $200, with the 14kg-17kg winner also receiving a Moeraki fishing charter trip, the 17.1kg-21.5kg winner receiving a Milford cruise, and the heaviest lamb winner receiving a 30-minute helicopter flight.

To get townsfolk involved, they were given the opportunity to buy a lamb, which was then to be entered in the competition.

Mrs Chittock expected rivalry between farmers.
