A South Otago Subway franchise which was started less
than two years ago has beaten more established stores to be
named the best franchise in the mainland.
The Balclutha franchisees, Richard and Paula Jackson, said
they were stunned by the win, which was announced at the
annual South Island Subway awards in Christchurch recently.
A large mounted sandwich trophy, that takes pride of place in
the central Balclutha store, confirms the couple operate the
best Subway restaurant in the South Island.
The couple opened the store in May last year, and did not
expect to win such a prize so early into their business
venture.
They believed the key to running a successful business was
having great staff.
They have also enjoyed giving back to the community.
The South Island awards night was a big occasion for the
Balclutha franchise, as it also won an award for the best
looking Sub (a Spicy Italian) and for consistent compliance
in areas like book-keeping and food safety.
The next challenge for the couple is the New Zealand Subway
conference on the Gold Coast, in Australia, next May.
The Balclutha store will vie with the North Island franchisee
of the year at the conference to be named the overall
national winner.
An all-expenses paid trip to the Subway world conference in
Chicago is at stake.
