Its two hands taught a generation of New Zealand children how to tell the time, and now the Play School clock has been rescued from its time-out.

Invercargill Public Library children's librarian Lyndsay Tautari said the clock was bought by the Waikiwi Kindergarten in Invercargill from a TVNZ auction in Dunedin and then donated to the library after it became damaged.

"We thought it was a replica . . . we had no idea."

The show was first filmed in Dunedin in 1975 and ended in 1990.

Several of the soft toys - Humpty, Big Ted, Jemima and Manu - were now housed at Te Papa, which was also interested in the clock, she said.

"We have had it out on display and it is proving very popular."
