Alexandra: Outdoor ice rink to open

Iceinline, Alexandra's outdoor ice rink, will open today.

Iceinline chairman Nick Loughnan said ice-making started well last Sunday night, but wind earlier this week undid much of that good work.

Since then, cold, calm conditions had been good for ice-making.

It is shaping up to be an important year for the rink, with tenders called to produce a viability and feasibility study. Mr Loughnan said that study would look at all the options for the rink before a staged redevelopment was undertaken.

He said the outcome of the study would determine the rink's future, although people needed to support the facility if it was to stay open.

"The present rink is no longer financially viable. Costs associated with keeping the outdoor ice sheet are now prohibitive, and to survive, the facility must be enclosed."

The rink was only opening this year thanks to a recent sponsorship deal with Delta Utilities, Mr Loughnan said.

"We have been given an 11th-hour reprieve, but are not out of the woods yet."

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Alexandra Winter Sports Club, which was the forerunner to Iceinline.

The club started when the Lower Manorburn Dam was built in 1935. Jubilee celebrations are scheduled for the first weekend in July.
