A four-wheel-drive vehicle driver pushes through a section of road flooded by the Manuherikia River at Galloway yesterday.
The road to St Bathans from Becks was closed yesterday morning by a washout of the approach to the bridge over Dunstan Creek.Parts of Galloway, near Alexandra, were flooded yesterday by the Manuherikia River, which burst its banks in some places following heavy rain.

Four-wheel-drives were the only vehicles able to be driven through a flooded section of road linking Galloway to the main highway into Alexandra yesterday.

Hundreds of people drove to the area to see one of the highest levels the river has reached in recent years.

Galloway resident Don Forbes told the Otago Daily Times the river burst its banks at Galloway between 11am and midday yesterday.

Mr Forbes, who lives on Fisher Lane parallel to sections of the river, said the flooding was not high enough to threaten houses.

"It's no big deal - although I hope I'm right in saying that," he said.

No houses were flooded by the river, although many rural properties had most or all paddocks under water for a time.

The Clutha River rose over a cycle track along its banks between Alexandra and Clyde, and flooded parts of a park near the Alexandra boat ramp, which was also under water.

Further away, a section of the Becks-St Bathans road was closed because of a washout at Dunstan Creek.
