There were fairies at the bottom of the garden yesterday, and pixies in the pond, at the inaugural "gnaughty gnomes and fabulous fairies party", at Glenfalloch Woodland Garden.

Fairies in disguise shrieked with delight as they scrambled through the woodland on their gnome treasure hunt, part of the Cadbury Chocolate Festival.

They paused only for a spot of gumboot throwing, chocolate fishing and playing quoits with gnomes.

Sophie Broadley, of Dunedin, said she always dressed up as a fairy and had seen several real ones in the trees.

Chief fairy and Glenfalloch marketing assistant Sophie Barker estimated about 80 fairies and gnomes had turned up for the party and another 100 had taken part in the gnome hunt.

Head gardener and chocolate fish pond manager Alan Funnell said "it was good to see so many kids in the garden, running around".

The day was rounded off with a fairy tea party and prizes for the best costume. - Keira Stephenson
