They may not be the next Master Chef, but a group of Dunedin seniors are learning tips and techniques to help them create their own delicious dishes.

The first class of the senior chef programme, a cooking course for seniors designed to teach them the basics of healthy eating and cooking for one, was held this week.

Senior chef tutor Lois Mitchell said the class on Monday was the first for Age Concern Otago. A similar course had been run by Age Concern in Christchurch.

Two classes were held in the Octagon site of Age Concern, with another two classes to be held in South Dunedin and Mosgiel, Mrs Mitchell said.

The course was mainly aimed at men living alone, or who were sent to the course by their wives, she said.

Classes members learnt nutritional advice, how to read food labels and shopping tips in the first half of the lesson. The second part of the lesson involved making a meal by following a recipe, Mrs Mitchell said.

Amateur cook Roy Knight thought the first lesson of the course was "excellent", and resulted in a "tasty" meal of mini-quiches and coleslaw.
