A project to clean up and modernise Kew Park won the top
prize at the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards, which were
presented at a function last night.
The Kew Park Trust won the Pod award for its work in
beautifying and restoring Kew Park.
The park, by Thorn St in Caversham, had fallen into a state
of disrepair through neglect and vandalism.
But an active Kew Park Development Trust was set up, led by
fundraising chairman Rod McNaughton, and had updated the
park.
It now has modern playground equipment, a smooth asphalt
surface for cycling, grass fields, and facilities for
skateboarders.
There were 47 award recipients, from individuals to schools
and community groups.
Green Island Primary School won the Taylor Shield for work in
the Sinclair Wetlands, with Kimberley Cleland second for
various environmental projects around the city.
Bert Ayers was third, for his work in cleaning kerbs around
Port Chalmers.
