Father Nicholas Dillon has played organs in some of the world's greatest cathedrals, but he is still relishing the opportunity to be reunited with an "old friend" in Dunedin tonight.

The former Dunedin organist will give a concert on the St Joseph's Cathedral organ for the first time in more than a year.

He was introduced to the organ when he was 14, becoming organ scholar and accompanying the Gabrieli Choir and the Cathedral Choir.

As well as giving organ recitals around the South Island, Fr Dillon (31) was a regular guest in Dunedin concerts, particularly RSA Choir concerts in the Dunedin Town Hall.

He was also involved in recordings for Television New Zealand's Praise Be programme in the Oamaru and Timaru basilicas, as well as the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Gore.

Since moving 10 years ago, Fr Dillon has become a priest in the Melbourne archdiocese and has juggled his busy career with that of a performer giving recitals around the globe.

He has played organs in the cathedrals of Florence, Venice, Vienna, Haarlem, Westminster, Melbourne and Sydney, the Dormition Abbey inJerusalem, the National Basilica in Brussels and St Peter's Basilica in Rome.

He returned to Dunedin frequently to play the organ at St Joseph's Cathedral, he said.

"In terms of it being the first pipe organ I played, there's an attachment. You could say it is an old friend. I always like returning to play it, for sure."

At present, he is the assistant priest at St Gerard's parish, North Dandenong, Melbourne.

Fr Dillon's Dunedin performance is the last in a three-concert tour of the South Island.

It begins at 7pm and will feature works by Bridge, Buxtehude, Campra, Dubois, Guilmant and Pachelbel, and will include J.S.Bach's Prelude and Fugue, St Anne, in E flat BWV 552.
