Pupils turn waste into art exhibits

Teacher Dana Turnbull said pupils created 26 entries entirely from recycled materials, from full items of clothing through to toy trucks.

The class had spent the term studying recycling and recently visited a number of organisations in Invercargill in an effort to glean recycling ideas, Mrs Turnbull said.

These included the Invercargill City Council recycling depot, the recycling centre, a second-hand shop and the Southland Museum and Art Gallery.

Guest speakers also came to the school to outline their efforts involving recycling.

The guest speakers included Waimumu worm farmer Margaret Martyn, Paddy's Bins owner Shane Brown, Gore District Council utilities manager Ross Haslemore and Salvation Army social worker Tom Banks.

Mrs Turnbull said the support given by those organisations' representatives was invaluable.

The pupils' exhibits would be on display at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery for a month.
