The Hawea Flat bike mechanic's wife, Jennie Taylor, has that issue covered, with her home-made "Sweet Cheeks Butt Butter", allowing Mr Drake to concentrate on completing one of the South Island's toughest mountain bike races.
Ms Taylor (34) distills garden herbs in her kitchen before mixing them with other ingredients to produce a range of lotions, balms and salves.
Friction, chafing and saddle sores are frankly discussed by the couple's mountain biking friends but the details are best left to the imagination.
"I think, if you are riding a lot you should be thinking a bit more about what you are putting down there," Ms Taylor said.
Ms Taylor said her husband inspired the name for the anti-chafing cream she started producing just over a year ago.
"I guess I was always calling David sweetie, and then I thought 'Sweet Cheeks'."
She makes about 20 jars a batch, usually a day before they are due to be delivered to stores in Wanaka, Queenstown, Timaru and Wellington.
Ms Taylor grew up in the United States and was living in Durango, Colorado, when she took a job with a herbalist and learned to make natural products and remedies.
She managed the herbalist's store for about two years and has continued to study naturopathy and herbs in Hawea Flat, where she and her New Zealand-born husband bought property several years ago and are now raising their boys Mica (4) and Ari (18 months).
Mr Drake was second solo man in last weekend's 12-hour Naseby mountain biking event, completing 23 laps of the 10.5km course.
