Emergency services spent more than an hour helping to stabilise and assist an injured Dunedin man at the site of a motorcycle crash beside Lake Hawea yesterday afternoon.

Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said the 46-year-old man broke his leg after he lost control of his bike while rounding a corner on State Highway 6.

The man and his bike ended up in a roadside ditch, about 3km on the Lake Hawea side of the Neck, as a result of the crash.

The man was among a group of five motorcyclists travelling to Haast, Sgt Nicholson said.

Wanaka St John ambulance crew and Lake Hawea fire brigade members helped treat the man, while a rescue helicopter and paramedic team from Queenstown flew to the area to transport the patient to Dunedin Hospital.

The accident took place at about 4pm and SH6 was closed for about 30 minutes, before traffic was restored to one lane.
