The company was planning to buy second-hand turbines from Europe, freed up by countries repowering with larger 1.5MW machines.
Pioneer Generation chief executive Peter Dowling said demand had outstripped supply after Denmark put a moratorium on repowering.
‘‘People were starting to object to big machines and the country had a couple of changes of government so they put a stop to it for now,'' he said.
‘‘There are one or two available in Spain and Italy but they can't sell until they replace theirs and they are still waiting for them to come out of the factory,'' he said.
The main factories are in Germany and Denmark, but Mr Dowling said there was such a worldwide demand for the turbines that there was a long waiting list.
‘‘American ones aren't much good to us, as they are 60-cycle 110v and they need too much work on them, so we are looking to Europe for ours,'' he said.
