Wind farm firm sourcing turbines

The Mt Stuart wind farm could be producing power within the next 10 to 15 months, but first the company behind the South Otago site needs to secure some wind turbines.

Central Otago company Pioneer Generation was granted resource consent for its Mt Stuart wind farm, between Milton and Lawrence, in February, and planned to buy nine new or secondhand turbines for the site.

Chief executive Peter Dowling told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the company was in talks with overseas manufacturers for the supply of nine wind turbines, capable of generating between 5.5MW and 6.5MW of power.

It was a "good time to be buying" as international demand for wind turbines was falling, and the firm wanted to source either new or secondhand models, he said.

However, negotiations were a "little bit up in the air", he said.

The firm was hopeful of securing a supplier within the next three months, and the turbines could be in place within 10 to 15 months.
