A puppy missing after a single-vehicle accident near Milton last week was found safe and well yesterday.

Craig Hopkins, who farms at Moneymore a few kilometres from the crash site, saw Baxter - a bichon-shitzu-cross - in a paddock on Monday but did not think much of it until he read about the missing puppy in yesterday's Otago Daily Times.

''He was hiding in a haystack ... I only found him because I went to the back of the barn to find a gate. He was probably hungry and missing his family.''

Constable Craig Gordon, of Balclutha, said a 25-year-old woman was travelling north on State Highway 1 about 5.15pm last Thursday, when she lost control of her Subaru Impreza, which hit a culvert and rolled, ending up on its roof.

The woman told police she had turned to check on her puppy after she crashed, but when emergency services arrived there was no sign of the tan and white dog.

Tania Good contacted the ODT on Monday, to appeal for any information about her daughter's missing 5-month-old puppy.

Mr Hopkins said he quickly called Ms Good and Baxter was soon reunited with his worried owner.

Ms Good said her daughter was happy and relieved to have Baxter back safely, and thanked Mr Hopkins and all the others who looked for him.
