Milton hosting 'Jailbreak' cycle event

Cyclists of all ages and abilities wanting to tackle the kind of terrain escaped prisoners may themselves face get their chance this month.

The Milton Karate Club's annual Milton Jailbreak, named because of its proximity to the Otago Corrections Facility at Milburn, will be staged on Sunday, May 17.

Club spokesman Stephen Kornyei said the event had grown in popularity since it began four years ago as a simple cycling and walking event.

In 2006, after demand from mountain bikers, organisers devised the "jailbreak" event to provide a more demanding event.

The club joined forces with local forest companies which owned land that boasted the kind of terrain riders were looking for, he said.

The Jailbreak features three separate events on the same course.

Children aged 10-15 can take part in a 6km-7km race; recreational riders can compete in a 34km course on unsealed forestry roads; and a "formidable" 50km course covers harder terrain.
