Moeraki locals had a pleasant surprise when a pod of orcas
started frolicking in Moeraki Bay yesterday.
Tania Johnston, of the Moeraki Tavern, said she saw at least
eight whales.
"They were super close - just one or two metres from the
shore. I saw about eight. There were definitely two families,
two sets of parents with calves. They were there for about
three hours, just cruising around between the Moeraki
boulders and Moeraki."
Miss Johnston said it was the second time in two years orcas
had visited the bay.
