The Wakatipu Aero Club is marking its 40th anniversary this year and to celebrate it is offering local residents discounts on an introductory aeronautical experience, with a qualified instructor.

"Flightseeing" was a crucial part of Queenstown's tourism industry and for four decades the club had been training private and commercial pilots in the resort - a "stunning but challenging corner of the world".

Club spokesman Ian Webb said the introductory package included a pre-flight briefing, a guided pre-flight inspection of the aircraft and "hands-on flying" over the Wakatipu.

The trial package cost $130, which included a 20-minute flight; alternatively, a package with a 40-minute flight would cost $210.

"The time spent in the air during a trial flight counts towards the flying time that a student pilot needs to accrue to obtain a private pilot licence.

"Many of today's airline pilots started their flying in this way, some of them setting out to fly for a hobby and not expecting that aviation would become their career.

"As we live in a spectacular part of the world, it's only logical that the trial flight from Queenstown Airport will be a spectacularly awesome experience," Mr Webb said.

Anyone interest in taking advantage of the Wakatipu Aero Club's locals' aeronautical experience was asked to call the club on (03) 442 3148.
