Plenty of elbow grease was used to get about 40 vehicles spic and span for the Queenstown Car Club's fourth annual Show and Shine day in the resort on Saturday.

Traditionally held at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds, this year the event was held at the Remarkables Park "red barn", which organisers were thrilled with.

While children got their fill of candyfloss and had their faces painted, the adults admired the cars and motorbikes.

The oldest vehicle this year was a 1927 Custom Built Stutz AA, with the first runner-up a 1929 Dodge 6 Roadster, owned by Karen and Greg Dorans, of Queenstown, the latter winning the award for best pre-1950 car.

The prize for the best car built between 1950 and 1970 was tied between Ian Boyd's Mustang 64 and Kevin van de Water's 1965 Corvette.

Greg and Shirleen Potter's 1972 HQ Ute took top honours in the 1970-today category.

While Grant Aitken's red Ford GT40 attracted plenty of attention, it was Barry Michel's bright green 1973 HQ Holden which won the 2011 People's Choice Award - a trophy designed by JP Engineers.

Later in the afternoon Invercargill signwriter Robbie Miller provided the entertainment with his freehand design skills on display while decorating the the boot of Michael Scott's 1967 SS Impala Fastback.

Club secretary Caroline Cullimore said cars had come from Invercargill, Riverton and Central Otago for Saturday's event, however inclement weather had affected numbers this year.
