NZSki is targeting locals to fill 500 positions on its skifields for the 2012 ski season.

The company, which runs Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, is nearing the end of its recruitment process and has received "thousands" of applications, chief executive, James Coddington, said.

The focus this year was targeting more New Zealanders to work on the skifields, as it would yield a better outcome of local knowledge he said.

"When you are working up there you get asked questions on more than just skiing. People are often looking for some local knowledge on the area.

"Our focus is to try and recruit as many New Zealanders and as many locals as we can."

Between 4000 and 5000 people apply for jobs with NZSki every year. Last season, about 60% of the workforce were New Zealanders.

Last month NZSki announced they had achieved a 63% retention rate of last year's employees, which now means out of 1000-plus skifield workers it is looking for 450-500 new staff.

Mr Coddington said the recruitment process this year had changed, and would be more targeted and require three separate stages.

These included the online applications, which closed on April 5, and a further selection process on Coronet Peak this Saturday. Those successful would then be invited for a one-on-one interview with head of department.

Mr Coddington did not want to give too much away about this weekend's selection process, but said it would involve three events that would "challenge people to step out of their comfort zones".

"We are looking for personality and world-class customer service ... we want to see how they will react in certain situations.

"We are certainly hopeful we will get a large uptake."

NZSki, which also runs the Mt Hutt ski area, employs between 1000 and 1100 people during peak season and in 2011 posted a staff retention rate of 62%, up from 58% in 2010.
