The 21st annual Autumn Art School at Mt Aspiring College, Wanaka, this week, has attracted more than 170 artists from around New Zealand.

Organiser Robyn van Reenan said some artists had travelled from Tahiti and Australia for the school.

Book art tutor Yoka Van Dyk, of Whanganui, said she had taught at least seven times at the school but had taken a break for the past two years and returned to her home in the Netherlands.

There she studied medieval illuminated book binding techniques and styles.

Her class at Wanaka was called "Between Eastern Scroll and Western Codex", and participants were learning about eastern decorated manuscripts while making medieval gothic book bindings with wood boards and leather thongs, from around 1450.

The books would also have an illuminated title page, she said.

The school will be open to the public tomorrow from 1pm to 2.30pm before finishing the same day.
