Coronet Peak will host two more major alpine ski race
events next week, after FIS Continental Cup officials decided
to switch racing from an Australian skifield.
The Queenstown skifield will on Monday host a Continental Cup
giant slalom and on Tuesday a slalom race, both of which had
been scheduled for Mt Hotham in the Snowy Mountains of
Victoria.
Coronet Peak racing and events manager Richard Murphy said
the extra races would help athletes build momentum after the
success of Coronet's Canadian FIS race last week.
The races were FIS sanctioned and were the highest level of
alpine ski racing in the southern hemisphere, he said.
"We're stoked to host them and offer more opportunities of
world-class racing action to the team's training here," Mr
Murphy said.
The extra races would give help New Zealand's top-ranked
skiers, Ben Griffin, Tim Cafe and Adam Barwood, the chance to
improve their world rankings and FIS ranking points on home
territory, he said.
Ski team athletes from Canada, the US, and Slovenia were
expected to line up alongside New Zealand's alpine racers, Mr
Murphy said.
