Baking a difference

Daffodil Day means pikelet day in Wanaka, where once a year for the past 20 years, a spatula-wielding army of volunteers has made cream-topped morning tea shouts to raise money for the Cancer Society.

Upper Clutha Lions volunteers (from left) Gay Kennedy, Christel Bohm and Shirley Dickson are pictured displaying another tray of fresh pikelets made during the fundraiser yesterday, while others keep baking in the background.

The Wanaka branch of the National Bank has always been the venue and demand has increased so much that, for the first time, the volunteers worked two days instead of one.

Lions volunteer Gaye Thompson, who co-ordinated orders, said at least 182 dozen (2184 individual pikelets) were sold on Thursday.

By 9.30am yesterday orders for another 200 dozen had been received and more were still coming in.

Customers could give whatever amount they liked for a dozen. A tally will be available in due course.
