The Wanaka Rodeo Club's new ground at Albert Town will have its debut run this weekend.

The club's annual jackpot rodeo will be the first event at the new rodeo site, which is on top of a closed landfill at the Albert Town Recreational Reserve.

Work on the new venue was completed last month and the club has secured a 33-year lease for the land.

Today's rodeo will serve as a practice event for those competing in the upcoming summer rodeo circuit, as well as for the club.

It will be testing its new facilities ahead of its main annual rodeo on January 2.

For the past 40 years, Peter and Dee Gordon have granted a lease to the club on their Golf Course Rd land, but the development of the Aspiring Lifestyle Retirement Village meant the club had to find a new home.

The proposal to relocate to the Albert Town site was first aired almost two years ago but resource consent uncertainty delayed the shift.

Club president Roger Moseby said local contractors had given hours of free labour to shape the new grounds, and Mr Gordon had donated soil from the retirement village development to build the spectators' bank.

The project had been positive for the club and the community in that it had "pulled everybody together" and "transferred what was an old dump site into a council asset", Mr Moseby said.

The club hoped the venue could be used for other purposes as well.

Club treasurer Gay Labes said today's rodeo was a "low-key event" starting about midday. It had attracted about 50 entrants, mostly from Otago and Southland, but points would not count towards the official Christmas/New Year rodeo circuit.

"I think everything will go fine. It's just good to get something under your belt," Mr Moseby said.
